STORIES FROM INDIA

Welcome to Stories from India, a new project dedicated to sharing stories, ancient and modern, from the Indian subcontinent.

Each week, we will publish a new story. In sharing these stories with you, our hope is that you will be inspired to tell and perform your own stories. In challenging times stories can bring us together and build empathy—as they always have, since the beginning of time.

Preeti Vasudevan (Artistic Director, Thresh) performs the stories using "abhinaya"—the term in Indian traditional dance for "expression." She does this by using special facial movements and hand gestures (called "mudras") to create the mood of the story.

STORY LIBRARY

Our first series comprises three well-known stories that derive originally from India's Buddhist tradition, called the JATAKA TALES. Each of the stories shows clever animals outwitting their human enemies!

THE CLEVER ANTELOPE

A lovely story about how a clever antelope outwits a foolish hunter who chases him into the forest.

THE PRINCESS AND THE BIRD

A king's daughter escapes from the palace and enters a dark forest. Scared and alone ,she fears for her life—until a small bird shares his wisdom.

THE TIGER AND THE HUNTER

A tiger is chased deep into the forest by a remorseless hunter. For days he eludes his would-be killer—and when they do finally meet something very unexpected happens!

Talk to us!

We would love to hear from you. If you enjoyed what you saw, please let us know what worked best for you.

Are there other things you might like to experience and see? Remember, it takes a village...
