about the production

Études (in-development) is a dynamic dance dialogue between Preeti Vasudevan, Indian classical dancer, and Amar Ramasar, Principal dancer at the New York City ballet that redefines classical movement idioms to create an evening of contemporary relevance and beauty.

Études questions the notion of “traditional” and forges a new way of communication.
In essence, the work represents a deeply personal journey of discovery for both artists. This exposure, each to the other’s forms, has created an osmotic process of exchange by which each form is deepened and liberated by the other—and a new language emerges.

Both dancers are steeped in the training and discipline of their respective classical culture, and are pre-eminent performers in their respective disciplines. And yet each has an intense curiosity about the other, in terms of how the culture and tradition is expressed and embodied in a vocabulary of movement.

Études possesses an additional dimension in that both collaborators are of Indian descent. Until now, they have each taken divergent artistic paths: through this piece they meet and develop a new language, inspired and energized by the intense artistic crucible of New York, perhaps the most diverse city in the world.

Etudes was initially developed as part of Vasudevan’s Spring 2016 Resident Fellowship at The Center for Ballet and the Arts, NYU and has been further developed with support from the Jerome Robbins Foundation and Jacques d’Amboise’s, National Dance Institute (NDI).

Études is expected to premiere in 2019 as a full-length evening work.
